Rough Day? Here’s How to Feel Better.

Ever get home from work and you still feel like you’re ‘on’? Still sort of feel like you’re still there? Maybe work was a little stressful today and you feel really on edge and even though you’re home, you still don’t really feel like you’ve settled down.

I know that feeling. I get it. That was today for me. I sort of have my own little routine that I try to do when I get home so that I can settle down and just enjoy my night. If I don’t, I end up leaving my brain at work and then I spend my entire night stressed out and I feel like I never de-stressed at the end of the day.

Now, this is what works for me. It might not be the same for you but if I can maybe give you an idea, I hope it helps.

First thing I like to do when I get home is unpack my bags and tidy my space. If I don’t do this and I just sit down, I’m going to have a hard time getting up and doing it. However, I will sit on the couch and think about everything that I have to do and then just get even more worked up. So I like to make sure that my things are unpacked and then I tidy things up. I make my bed, put things away, do dishes if I need to. I also like to make sure that I have my clothes for the next day set out.

Once that’s done, I’ll make a cup of tea and then sit down for a bit. Depending on the day, I’ll watch an episode of a show that makes me laugh or like today, I’ll work on writing a blog post.

Usually by around 5:00pm or 5:30pm, I’ll make myself dinner and eat it. Again, I’ll enjoy it while watching something that makes me laugh or one of my comfort movies (I wrote about them a few weeks ago, you can click here to see it). Do whatever you want. Enjoy your dinner in silence, listen to music, listen to a podcast, whatever. Just make sure that it feels good.

Typically, around 7 at the latest or so, I’ll make another cup of tea (something calming, like chamomile or something with lavender). I’ll then take my tea into the bathroom and have a bath. I like using lots of epsom salts and a goat milk bubble bath with lavender oil.

Once I’ve had a good soak, I’ll move into my bedroom, dim the lights and just take it easy. I’ll do my skin care routine, which just feels like really solid self care and calms me down, I’ll paint my nails, whatever. I just want to make sure that I’m cozy and comfortable and that I’m doing whatever the hell makes me feel good.

Something else that I will do is a guided meditation. I am a huge fan of the app Calm. I listen to it on a regular basis to help me sleep but when I’m stressed out, they have an awesome meditation called Emergency Calm. They’re short meditations that are really good at giving you a shot of calm.

Once I’m in bed, I’ll spritz a lavender pillow spray on my bed, journal a little bit, and then try to get some rest. I try really hard to get to bed early so that I can get as much sleep as possible.
