Skin Care: Winter 2018

My skin is changing.
Oh god, I’m turning 26 and my skin is changing and everything is upside down.

Okay, maybe I’m being a little dramatic but the point is the same. As I am aging, my skin is changing. I always used to have relatively normal skin. I mean, I never had much going for me but at least I had good skin. As I’ve gotten older, it has started to change towards more combination. This past winter, with -30 celsius temperatures, my skin has been painfully dry in some places and oily in others. I’ve also noticed that stress and anxiety has started to cause more breakouts in my skin.
So I’ve been focusing more on making sure that I have good skincare. I know that if I take care of my skin now, it’s going to be a lot easier to deal with as I get older and really, your skin is going to show the first signs of aging. I’ve been starting to invest in more items that I love and while I’m sure my routine is going to always be changing a little, as of right now, I have a routine that works well for me.
Most of my skincare goes on during the night. I don’t have a lot of time in the morning and I like being able to let my products sink in during the night. I find it relaxing and calming to prep my skin for bed.

Step 01: Glossier Milk Jelly Cleanser. I just started using this in the past couple weeks and I love it. It’s a really simple, uncomplicated cleanser. It’s gentle and soft with a light rose smell (you’ll find that rose is a theme here…) and it makes my skin feel so clean.
Step 02: Kate Somerville Exfolikate. I got this in aFabFitFun box and I’ve really been loving it. I don’t use this everyday but I use it a couple times a week when my skin needs it. It’s awesome. It really gets all the gunk off my face and it works well.

Step 03: Fresh Umbrian Clay Toner. This is something that I didn’t use for a while. It took me a little bit to get into using a toner but I decided to give it a go and I love it. A really good toner is meant to prep your skin for the rest of your routine and I’ve noticed that when I use this, my T zone doesn’t feel as oily and I’ve noticed the rest of my products working better.
Step 04: Origins Original Skin Essence Lotion. I adore a good essence or serum. They’re amazing. This one in particular makes my skin feel so bright and moisturized and plumped. It smells like rose and my skin reacts so well to it.

Step 05: Origins Original Skin Matte Moisturizer. This line from Origins is one of my absolute favourites. Again, it smells like rose and it feels so good. It’s the ultimate line for 20s skin. This is like a gel type of cream and it really does make my skin looks so matte but it’s also somehow really moisturizing. It soothes every little dry patch without making my skin more oily.
Step 06: Saturday Skin Eye Cream. This is another new purchase and I am really enjoying it. It makes my eyes look bright and awake and helps keep the skin around my eyes feeling good. I don’t know what it is, but there is just something so relaxing to me about putting on an eye cream. It really soothes me.
Step 07: Fresh Sugar Lip Caramel Balm. My lips are so painfully dry. I live in a dry climate, in the mountains, and my lips are so, so dry. I got this as a sample from Sephora and I used it for a day before I ordered a full size. I’m rather picky with lip balms. I don’t like it to have too strong of a flavour and I need it to work. And this works.

Step 08: Jurlique Rosewater Balancing Mist. This is my princess product. I’ve never noticed it really having a huge, noticeable effect on my skin but that being said, it feels so good. It is so relaxing and soothing and makes me feel like it’s finally time to wind down and go to bed.

Step 09: Masks. I love wearing masks. Clay, sheet, peel, eye, lip…I adore masks and I can’t imagine my life without them. Not only do they make my skin feel incredible, but for me, it’s time for myself. When I’m stressed and going a little crazy, taking a bit of extra time to just lay down with a mask on my face is brilliant self care for me.
